Tips for dining alone

Whenever I'm dining alone, regardless of my location, I keep a few things in mind. I often opt to sit at the bar because, having worked in the industry for years, I still feel guilty about occupying a table. This mindset is stereotypically American, and I'm gradually moving past it, though it has taken some time. Be prepared for some restaurants to try and seat you at an undesirable table (like the dreaded two-top near the bathroom) and be ready to decline it and request a better spot. Making reservations in advance can help with this, and I also try to dine during off-peak hours. These are the few occasions when our early American dinner times are advantageous. In France, there's often both indoor and outdoor seating, even in cooler months. Just be aware that if you sit outside, you'll likely share the space with a smoking table.

For restaurants that don’t offer online reservations, such as Tandem in Rouen, a good alternative is to use your hotel concierge to help you book a table. Additionally, if you make an effort to connect with the hotel staff, they are usually eager to recommend local places and can call ahead to secure a table for you. This can alleviate some of the stress of dining solo, particularly if you’re not confident in your French.

Eating alone can be intimidating, especially in a culture that emphasizes dining together, but I discovered that it eventually became a freeing experience, almost indulgent. This solitary time lets me enjoy each bite without interruptions and partake in people-watching, one of the best activities in France. Ultimately, with time, dining solo can transform from a source of stress into a cherished routine, embracing your independence and the lively world surrounding you.
